Thinking Big Picture
Broadening your perspective
Before you begin to think about a specific United Nations Goal lets take a look at some 'big picture' ideas about what is happening in the world today. Watch the following videos and then consider the questions below:
- What do you think are the common themes in the videos?
- Consider 'How does do these videos make you feel?'
- After watching these videos what is one thing that you would like to see change?
- How do you think you can make a difference?

Identifying a local problem
Observe how people interact with their environment. Watching people gives you clues as to what they think and feel— what they need. (this could be animals or other users)
Engage people directly—interact with and interview them. Engaging people tells us about their beliefs and values.
For example, Can you interview a shop about food wastage or speak to a community support network that help provide food. You may want to interview with empathy (the file is ready for you to download).
Immerse yourself in your users’ experience. Find (or create if necessary) ways to immerse yourself in specific environments to understand first hand who you’re designing for. The best solutions come from the best insights into human behavior. Discover the emotions that drive user behaviour. Uncover user needs (which they may or may not be aware of). Identify the right users to design for. Use your insights to design innovative solutions.

Then use the Research with Empathy worksheet and complete the worksheet. This asks you to consider how this issue has been solved by other communities and what gap you might fill with your idea (this may be a demographic based on geographical, culture or age)
